What are the Side Effects of the Abortion Pill?

When considering any medical procedure, like an abortion, you’ll want to research the common physical and mental side effects so you can do your due diligence and make an informed decision.

Read this article for a well-rounded understanding of what you can expect if you are considering the abortion pill, also called a medical abortion.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill consists of a two-drug regimen: mifepristone and misoprostol

Mifepristone, the first drug, is an antiprogestin that halts fetal development by blocking progesterone, thereby stopping the pregnancy.

After 24-48 hours, misoprostol is taken so the uterus starts cramping to expel the fetus, uterine lining, and other tissues.

What Are the Physical Consequences of an Abortion Pill?

According to the Mayo Clinic, potential consequences of a medical abortion include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

What Are the Side Effects of the Abortion Pill?

Common side effects of a medication abortion are vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping. However, other symptoms can also include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

How Does the Abortion Pill Affect My Mental Health?

While there is not a single predictor to know how abortion may affect you, researchers on both sides of the aisle agree that “abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness…” and, for some women, abortion directly contributes to mental health struggles.

How Do I Know If I’m Eligible for the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks (70 days) gestation. An ultrasound is the most accurate way to confirm the gestational age and viability of the pregnancy (if it’s still developing).
