No matter how careful you are or which contraception you use, it’s important to remember that no contraceptive method is 100% guaranteed to prevent pregnancy.
If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, you’re not alone. This is a common experience that happens to many women every year.
If your menstrual cycle is delayed or you are experiencing signs of early pregnancy (nausea, fatigue, etc), taking a pregnancy test is an essential first step.
At PRC Medical, we offer clinical pregnancy tests. If you’re unsure when is the best time to take the pregnancy test our nurse can definitely help you with that.
If you get a positive result, we also provide pregnancy decision support where you can learn more about your options and get connected to local resources.
Be Kind to Yourself
If you are feeling anxious about the news of an unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to remember to be kind to yourself.
It’s okay if you’re not able to perform at your usual levels while you’re in the early pregnancy stages and trying to make a pregnancy plan you feel confident about. Remember, you’re not alone or without options!
Schedule an Ultrasound
An ultrasound exam is recommended after you receive a positive result on your pregnancy test. This diagnostic scan can provide you with several key pieces of information:
- Location of the pregnancy: Pregnancies should be located inside the uterus. In some cases, the embryo may implant outside the uterus, which is known as an ectopic pregnancy—a condition that requires immediate medical attention.
- Gestational age: The ultrasound can determine your pregnancy’s gestational age by measuring the size and development of the embryo or fetus. This detail is helpful because it affects your available options.
- Pregnancy viability: Even after a positive test, you may have experienced a miscarriage without realizing it. As many as 26% of all pregnancies end naturally in this way. The ultrasound can help confirm whether the pregnancy is still viable (progressing and with a heartbeat).
At PRC Medical, we provide limited ultrasounds (if you are eligible based on your medical history) so that you can gather information about your pregnancy, ask questions, and learn more about your available options.
